Probill — Progressive bill number
A probill is the carrier-facing reference number that identifies a shipment on paperwork — the number printed on the bill of lading and rate confirmation that everyone quotes when they call about a load.
In plain terms.
Every load needs a number people can say out loud. The probill is that number: sequential, unique to your company, and printed on the documents so a driver, a customer and a broker are all talking about the same shipment without ambiguity.
It sounds trivial and it is not, because two people creating loads at the same moment must not get the same number. If they do, you have two shipments sharing an identity, and every downstream document — the bill of lading, the rate confirmation, the invoice — inherits the collision. Sorting it out afterwards means correcting paperwork that has already left the building.
