Accessorial
An accessorial is any charge on a load beyond the line-haul rate — detention, lumper fees, tarping, scale tickets, advances, layover and similar — billed for work or delay outside the basic move.
In plain terms.
The line-haul rate covers getting freight from A to B. Everything else that happened on the way is an accessorial: the two hours waiting at the dock, the lumper who unloaded it, the extra stop, the tarp, the reweigh.
Individually they are small, which is exactly why they leak. A single missed accessorial is not worth chasing; a missed accessorial on every third load across a year is a meaningful share of margin that never reaches an invoice. They are lost at the boundary between the person who experienced the charge — usually the driver — and the person raising the bill, who was not there.
Who deals with it
Incurred by the driver, communicated to dispatch, billed by accounting.
When it shows up
During the move, and then again at invoicing when someone has to remember it.
